Homestay Program

In coordination with the Okinawa Prefectural Government, the Okinawa Association of America (OAA) will be hosting 10 high school and college students from Okinawa and organize activities for them to learn about and interact with the OAA, the Uchinaanchu community, and Nikkei- and Uchinaanchu-owned businesses.

OPPORTUNITIES TO MEET THE STUDENTS

(dates/activities subject to change)

August 11 – Welcome Party

11 AM at the OAA Center’s Yamauchi Bldg. in Gardena, CA
The OAA invites the community to attend a mensōrē (welcome) party for the students. RSVP is required by August 8 due to limited space. Lunch will be provided.

August 12 – Participation in Nisei Week Parade

4 PM in Little Tokyo, Downtown L.A. (meeting place TBA)
Represent Okinawa with us in the Nisei Week Grand Parade! Dancers, flag holders, and water assistants are needed. For safety precautions, please note that the parade route is 3 blocks. Sign Up Here

August 14 – Volunteering at OAA

10 AM at the OAA Center in Gardena, CA
Our monthly Volunteer Day has been rescheduled to provide another opportunity for the Okinawan students to meet OAA members. If you are available this morning, please stop by to lend a helping hand and then enjoy a potluck lunch with the students.

August 15 – Dodgers vs. Giants Baseball Game

7 PM at Dodger Stadium
The students will attend the Dodgers vs. Giants game. The OAA has a limited number of tickets available for $30 each (infield reserved section 28RS). Please sign up by August 13 to purchase a ticket. Transportation to and from the stadium will not be provided.

August 17 – Uchinaaguchi Class

7 PM at the OAA Center’s Room 103 in Gardena, CA
Our monthly members-only Uchinaaguchi Class has been rescheduled to provide another opportunity for the Okinawan students to meet OAA members and observe the OAA’s activities. This is a members-only event. Admission is a $5 donation and one potluck dish. OAA uti Uchinaaguchi narayabira! (Let’s learn the Okinawan language at the OAA)

August 18 – Young Uchinaanchu from L.A. Gathering

2PM at the OAA Center’s Yamauchi Bldg. in Gardena, CA
The students from Okinawa would like to meet young Uchinaanchu from L.A.! The informal gathering will include interactive activities. RSVP is required by August 15 due to limited space.

August 18 – Farewell Party

4PM at the OAA Center’s Yamauchi Bldg. in Gardena, CA
The OAA invites the community to attend a farewell party for the students. RSVP is required by August 15 due to limited space. Dinner will be provided.

Homestay Students in Peru

The Kaiho Yoshu Network Building Program promotes international understanding between Okinawa and Okinawan communities overseas. By sending young Okinawans on homestays with communities of Okinawan descent overseas (kenjinkai), the program deepens friendships and aims to educate the next generation who will be responsible for, and continue, the “Uchina Network”. (This program was started on the occasion of the 4th Worlwide Uchinanchu Festival, and was conducted under the name of “Host Family Bank Program” until 2011.)
