In coordination with the Okinawa Prefectural Government, the Okinawa Association of America (OAA) will be hosting 10 high school and college students from Okinawa and organize activities for them to learn about and interact with the OAA, the Uchinaanchu community, and Nikkei- and Uchinaanchu-owned businesses.

OPPORTUNITIES TO MEET THE STUDENTS

August 11 – Welcome Party

OAA Center’s Yamauchi Bldg. in Gardena, CA
(time to be announced)

Please help us give the students from Okinawa a grand mensōrē (welcome)!

August 12 – Participation in Nisei Week Parade

(time to be announced)
Represent Okinawa with us in the Nisei Week Grand Parade! Dancers, flag holders, and water assistants are needed. For safety precautions, please note that the parade route is 3 long blocks and the weather will likely be very hot. Sign Up Here

August 14 – Volunteering at OAA

10 a.m. at the OAA Center in Gardena, CA
Our monthly Volunteer Day has been rescheduled to provide another opportunity for the Okinawan students to meet OAA members. If you are available this morning, please stop by to lend a helping hand and then enjoy a potluck lunch with the students.

August 15 – Dodgers vs. Giants Baseball Game

August 17 – Uchinaaguchi Class

7 p.m. at the OAA Center’s Room 103 in Gardena, CA
Our monthly members-only Uchinaaguchi Class has been rescheduled to provide another opportunity for the Okinawan students to meet OAA members and observe the OAA’s activities. OAA uti Uchinaaguchi narayabira! (Let’s learn the Okinawan language at the OAA)

August 18 – Young Uchinaanchu from L.A. Gathering

Homestay Students in Peru

The 2016 homestay program took place in Peru (photo: Okinawa Prefectural Government)

The Kaiho Yoshu Network Building Program promotes international understanding between Okinawa and Okinawan communities overseas. By sending young Okinawans on homestays with communities of Okinawan descent overseas (kenjinkai), the program deepens friendships and aims to educate the next generation who will be responsible for, and continue, the “Uchina Network”. (This program was started on the occasion of the 4th Worlwide Uchinanchu Festival, and was conducted under the name of “Host Family Bank Program” until 2011.)
