2017 Scholarship for Students of Japanese Culture

The Okinawa Association of America (OAA) is currently seeking applicants for the Japanese Prefectural Association of Southern California (JPASC / Nanka Kenjinkai Kyogikai) scholarship award for exceptional students of Japanese culture. We can recommend up to two (2) OAA members (final selection will be done by the JPASC).

DEADLINE: JULY 17, 2017 (MONDAY)

Application Requirements:

  • Current member of the OAA with no outstanding dues
    • If the applicant is a dependent, then their parent/guardian must be a current OAA member
    • If the applicant or parent/guardian is a member of another kenjinkai, you may apply through them
  • Between 17 – 27 years of age
  • Dedicated practitioner of a Japanese cultural tradition (e.g. arts, martial arts*, language)
    • * For martial arts, the applicant must have a minimum of ni-dan or equivalent

The applicant will need a recommendation letter from his/her instructor and the OAA, school transcripts, and passport photos.

DEADLINE: May 31, 2017

REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be fully or partially of Okinawan descent
• Parents (guardians) or applicant must be OAA member(s)
• Minimum GPA of 3.0
• Must be graduating high school in 2017

The awards will be based primarily on academic accomplishments with due consideration given to extracurricular, community activities, and financial needs. The scholarship awards will be presented at the OAA’s Annual Members’ Picnic at Whittier Narrows Recreation Park on Sunday, July 16, 2017 (date subject to change).

Okinawa Cultural Festival (Formerly OAA Bazaar)

On Sunday, September 25th from 11AM-4PM, the Okinawa Association of America is hosting its annual Okinawa Cultural Festival (previously known as Bazaar) to raise money and celebrate the rich and unique culture of our community. As always, there will be plenty of food and entertainment, showcasing both traditional and modern elements of Okinawan culture! The OAA Okinawa Cultural Festival will be held at the OAA Center,  16500 South Western Avenue, Gardena, CA 90247.

  • Andagi – Okinawan donuts
  • Ashitibichi* – Pig’s feet soup
  • Beniimo Ice Cream* – Okinawa purple sweet potato
  • Fu Chanpuru* – Okinawan stir fry with egg flatbread

All entries must be posted by 3:00pm onSunday, September 25,2016. Any picture posted after 3:00pm will no be eligible for the contest. Submissions will be judged by quality and who looks like they’re enjoying it the most. The winner will receive a $50 cash prize! Winners will be announced on Instagram.

2016 Uchinaa Junior Study Program

ATTENTION OAA MEMBERS!

Junior Study Tour

The Uchinaa Junior Study Program (formerly the Junior Study Tour) is an annual immersion program that brings 20 middle and high school students to the islands of Okinawa.

Sponsored by the Okinawa Prefectural Government, elected students are given an all-expense-paid trip to study Okinawan history, culture, society, and diaspora, with an emphasis on nature, peace, and identity. Students will also be given the opportunity to interact with Uchinaanchu from around the world as well as students from Okinawa, with the hope that bonds and understandings will develop between overseas Uchinaanchu and their mother island.

TOUR DATES: July 24 ~ August 8, 2016

APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 1, 2016 (FRIDAY)
It may be delivered in person, mailed, or emailed, but it MUST be in the office by 4:00 PM (Pacific Standard Time)
