2019 Scholarship for Students of Japanese Culture (Nanka Kenjinkai Kyogikai)

The Okinawa Association of America (OAA) is currently seeking applicants for the Japanese Prefectural Association of Southern California (JPASC, Nanka Kenjinkai Kyogikai) scholarship award for exceptional students of Japanese and Okinawan culture.


Each Southern California-based kenjinkai (prefectural association) can recommend up to two (2) of their members and the final selection will be made by the JPASC.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Current member of the OAA with no outstanding dues
    • If the applicant is a dependent, their parent(s)/guardian(s) must be a current OAA member(s)
    • If the applicant or parent/guardian is a member of another kenjinkai (prefectural association), you may apply through them
  • Between 17 – 27 years of age
  • Must have acquired outstanding skill in the study of Japanese culture such as Art, Entertainment, Martial Arts*, etc.
    • Must be currently training or studying
    • Studying for a minimum of 2 years
    • * For martial arts, the applicant must have a minimum of ni-dan or equivalent

Required Documents:

  • Recommendation letter from teacher/instructor describing the duration of applicant’s study and degree of accomplishment
  • Recommendation letter from kenjinkai president
  • School transcripts
  • 2 passport photos
