OAA Members headed to Texas, y’all!
Several OAA members headed to Houston, Texas to perform in, support, and celebrate the Okinawan Cultural Association of Texas (OCAT)‘s “Kokyo: Dialogue Between Hearts” on Sunday, October 27, 2013. This event also celebrated the 5th anniversary of Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Texas Branch. Chantelle Takara (shibucho), Ken Yamauchi (advisor), Kristin Yamauchi (coordinator), and Clarence Watanabe from Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Los Angeles Branch performed along side members from the Texas, Brazil and Okinawa branches of Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko. Master Katsuko Teruya, Master Haruo Ishihara, Atsushi Gushi, and Yuki Shingaki provided musical accompaniment throughout the show. Amy Ono (who also sang and performed during intermission with Yuki Shingaki), Sachi Kinjo and Yuhi Miyazato provided support back stage. Joseph Kamiya assisted the organizers throughout the week as they prepared for the show and was the stage manager for the show.
- Nana Akahoshi was the OAA’s 2013 Nanka Kenjinkai Kyogikai (Japanese Prefectural Association of Southern California) scholarship recipient.
- Mako, daughter of OAA members, Gary and Kyoko Williams, recently competed in the U.S. Figure Skating National Solo Dance Championships and won the Silver Medal (Juvenile combined compulsory pattern dance and solo dance skate competitions)! Mako, who is currently in the 8th grade, competed against 64 skaters from across the country at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, CO. Congratulations for your amazing achievement!
OAA Member Submissions
Not everyone has the time to write a full article about recent OAA Member achievements nor does the Haisai OAA News always have the space for these types of articles, however, the OAA would like to start a new section which would recognize our members’ achievements in the form of short write-ups.
We welcome write-ups and/or pictures with captions of OAA members describing their achievements. Please send your write-up and/or photo with caption to email@example.com. We will include as many as possible and those that are not included in the newsletter will be held over for the following newsletter.
